Cardiff M.A.D.E. C.I.C Lochaber Street 41 CF243 Cardiff

Zoe Gingell will be our host for the evening and will tell us a bit more about Cardiff M.A.D.E and supporting local artists making a splash in the bigger world. So many artists, so much creativity..and needing places and space to show their wares...

Rabab Ghazoul of Gentle Radical will bring us her idea for a Women's 'Share-a-thon' in July and tell us more about her organisation and the Women's Film Club she's been running for many years...now separate again from WOW (Wales One World). Rabab wants critique and feedback on her idea and how it might work.

Sarah Rees will talk a...bout an online women's news/ lifestyle website she is considering setting up. She's been talking to a lot of mum bloggers/ mumpreneurs who are heading into the world of blogging as they are unable to work due to childcare restrictions and wants a way to bring them together to create a shared voice about the things that matter to them. Sarah would like to pick our brains about what might work, what might not and where she should focus her efforts.

Urbanistas NE May Turf TED Talk

May 08, 2018

Can art improve our cities public spaces?

Public space is a crucial element to the urban environment, with multiple dimensions of cultural, social, political and economic components.

Yet do we enjoy or even take notice of the public spaces we inhabit? For many people in today's society public space is a place of only necessary activity, so can we change that?

This May meet up hopes to evoke discussion about what makes a good public space, the public spaces that you enjoy and how we can improve our own cities public spaces though street art, art installations and the business improvement district. As inspiration a series of TED talks will be presented looking at what makes public space and some fascinating public art projects across the globe.

Join us on Wednesday 9 May 2018, 18.00-20.00, at Good Space, Floor 2, Commercial Union House, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6QE.

Please book your space so we know how many snacks to get!

April 17, 2018

The sounds of our city…buskers playing upturned buckets, the rumble of the Metro, the clinking and clanking of a building site, music spilling out of shops, the hustle and bustle of shoppers on Northumberland Street.

Cathy Russell is fascinated by the music and sounds we hear in Newcastle, so much so, she is building a sound map of our city. And she wants our help to make it happen.

At April’s Urbanistas North East meet up you will learn about Cathy’s sound map idea, listen to collected sounds, lend your thinking caps to help develop the idea, and most of all, give you support to a fellow Urbanista. Because that’s what we’re all about.

Here are a few other sound collections that have inspired Cathy so far Street Music Map, Cities and Memory, and Sound Cities.

Amplify Cathy's work and have your ears opened to the sounds around you.

The Urbanistas LDN Expo 23.0 is sold out! But watch this space to hear more about the two projects which are on the agenda:

Lottie McCarthy will present ‘One-For-Two’ Houses, a project around unlocking underutilised council owned land for self-build affordable housing in London. The good news: Lewisham Council are interested in taking the concept further. Lottie would like to pick our brains about what might work, what might not and where the team should focus their efforts.

Tessa Gooding is Founding Director at Urban Patchwork, an estate agent social enterprise for residential property sales and lettings. Urban Patchwork is a hybrid between the traditional high street agent and an online agent, seeking to meet market demand for real estate services, improve industry working practices and create a model that reinvests profits in homeless housing and support. Tessa is keen to get critique and feedback on how Urban Patchwork could operate and develop.

For those of you who didn't snag a ticket, why not head along to Lily Bernheimer's book launch. Her first book, How Everyday Spaces Structure Our Lives, Behaviour, & Well-Being, published by Little, Brown on 30 November, 2017, looks at what makes everyday spaces work, how they shape us, and what they say about us. Join Davison Highley, Space Works Consulting, Alastair Parvin of WikiHouse and Rachel Fisher of Urbanistas for an author reading and drinks reception. Tickets here!

Pop up Justice - Reflecting on Relationships in the Temporary City

August 07, 2017

Temporary urban interventions are increasingly visible in contemporary cities. They take diverse forms – from community gardens to pop-up cinemas, from outdoor art installations to mobile libraries – and have been given many labels – from “guerrilla” to “everyday”, “tactical” to “DIY”. A burgeoning and largely celebratory literature has highlighted ways in which these transient practices propose alternative lifestyles, reoccupy urban space with new uses, and reinvent daily life from the bottom up, in the pursuit of more just and sustainable cities. Join Associate Professor Lee Stickells, University of Sydney, Amelia Thorpe, UNSW and Timothy Moore, Sibling Architecture. Copresented with Sydney Ideas and in conversation with Professor Ann Forsyth the Director of the Urban Planning Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
